DonJoy Lateral J knee brace is designed to stabilize the patella (kneecap)
during day-to-day activities and sports. This highly popular brace helps
specifically with lateral patellar subluxation, dislocation, tracking problems,
and chondromalacia. It combines the compression of a traditional knee sleeve
with the lateral and medial support of a brace, allowing the knee joint full
range of motion while stabilizing the patella.
It is a
lightweight, low profile, supportive knee brace for sports such as basketball,
softball, running, swimming, surfing, and wrestling. The
tubular, padded J buttress runs along the lateral knee, up against the patella,
keeping the patella in position and helping it to track properly. You have
the choice of a hinged or a non-hinged version of the Lateral J. The removable,
rigid hinges (that sit in pockets that run along the sides of the brace)
provide extra stability for the patella and support for ligament instability.
The straps run from the lateral (outer) side of the leg to the medial (inner) side of the leg and are attached with Velcro. The adjustable straps provide additional stabilization and support. Users report an increased sense of security that their kneecaps will stay in the proper position when wearing the brace.
There is a choice of fabrics: the brace is made from either neoprene or Drytex. Although neoprene is waterproof (and is the fabric used for surfers’ wetsuits), it can be a bit warm to wear, and some people are allergic to it. Drytex, a patented Lycra fabric surrounding a nylon core, is an anti-microbial, lightweight, more breathable alternative to neoprene. The better airflow means that the Drytex option is good for warmer climates or people who are allergic to neoprene.
The Drytex version has seams, while the neoprene has none. Some people find that the seam at the back of the knee is uncomfortable and can chafe the skin, but most users consider the brace to be extremely comfortable.
The Lateral J comes in six sizes. To get the correct size, measure your thigh and calf 6” above and below your kneecap. If you find that you are in between sizes, choose the larger size.
The brace is available in left or right configurations.
To put the brace on, pull it up over the foot and into position with the opening over the patella. The curve of the padded J should be nudging up against the patella. The straps are then pulled from the outside to the inside of the brace and attached. It should fit snugly on the leg and natural kneecap motion should not be impeded.
The brace is suitable for use in both salt and fresh water. If it is submerged in salt water or chlorinated water it should be rinsed with tap water after use and allowed to air dry.
To care for the sleeve, wash it by hand using a mild detergent and warm water, rinse well and air dry. Do not put it in the washing machine or dryer.
